10 Most Anticipated Movies 2016: #5-#1

First of all, I would like to say how sorry I am for the delay in posting this. My life has gotten pretty hectic lately with exams and uni interviews, and my work here has fallen to the wayside. I’m sorry for that.

Anyway, without further ado, here my Top 5 Most Anticipated Movies of 2016:

#5: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

rogue oneAs I’ve mentioned before in my previous post about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I don’t know massive amounts about the franchise. I’ve seen all the films, but that is the full extent of my knowledge. However, seeing TFA back in December, I suddenly became a lot more connected to the Star Wars universe and am now gagging to see more. This is why I have put Rogue One so high on my list.

Much like The Force Awakens, most plot details are being kept firmly under wraps, but we do know that the film will centre on a group tasked with stealing the plans for the Death Star.

Obviously it’d be foolish to ignore the excellent cast that has been assembled too, including Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Ben Mendelsohn, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen and Mads Mikkelsen. Even if I wasn’t a Star Wars fan at all, I would still be interested in watching a cast that good.

After the box office records that TFA has broken, Rogue One is sure to be a smash hit!

#4: Deadpool

deadpool

As you can see from the advertising material above, this film is going to be absolutely hilarious.

Deadpool (according to IMDB) is about “A former Special Forces operative turned mercenary is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopting the alter ego Deadpool.” It stars Ryan Reynolds as the Merc With A Mouth, as well as Gina Carano, Morena Baccarin, T.J Miller, Ed Skrein, Stefan Kapicic and Brianna Hildebrand.

I’m a big fan of the Deadpool comic books and an especially great thing about this film is that it is clear Ryan Reynolds is a massive fan too. He has been trying to get this movie going for years now and you can tell from the trailers that he’s in his element with this role.

This movie drops in a few weeks time and I am certain it’ll be worth the wait.

#3: Silence

silence

This is a film about two Jesuit priests who travel to Japan to find their mentor and propagate Christianity. To be perfectly honest with you, this wouldn’t normally be the type of film to entice me. But I can’t help but be drawn in by everything I’ve seen and heard about this film.

Silence is directed by living legend Martin Scorsese and stars Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Shin’ya Tsukamoto amongst others.

So far the only titbits of information we’ve been given are a few pictures, but hopefully we should be expecting a trailer sometime soon.

The combination of Martin Scorsese, one of my favourite directors, and Andrew Garfield, one of my favourite actors catapults Silence high on my ‘Most Anticipated List’

#2: Captain America: Civil War

civilwarheader

I don’t think there is anyone in the entire world who isn’t excited for this movie to hit cinemas in May.

The sequel to Captain America: The Winter Soldier is being referred to as ‘Avengers 2.5’ because the cast includes all members of the Avengers films, minus Thor and Hulk. It is also being directed by the Russo brothers, who will be taking charge of the next two Avengers movies.

The story follows a rift between Captain America and Iron Man, focusing largely on Cap’s best friend, Bucky. This rift causes the superhero folk in the Marvel Universe to pick a side; Steve or Tony?. This premise alone is pretty mouth-watering, but the addition of Ant-Man, as well as the first appearances of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, makes this film utterly impossible to miss.

I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Captain America: Civil War is going to be an incredible movie.

#1: Hail, Caesar!

hail-caesar-quad

Hail, Caesar! is about a Hollywood ‘fixer’ who has to deal with the kidnaping of movie star Baird Whitlock in the middle of filming his latest film.

It is written and directed by the Coen Brothers, who are probably my favourite directors in Hollywood right now. Hail, Caesar! stars George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Johan Hill, Ralph Fiennes, Alden Ehrenreich and Frances McDormand. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the greatest cast I’ve ever seen assembled. It is honestly shocking to see this calibre of talent in just one movie.

The trailers that have been released are genuinely hilarious and superb. What I really adore about these trailers, however, is that they don’t give away the entire film, which is incredibly rare nowadays. The second trailer was basically just one brilliantly funny scene.

If you told me a year ago that anything would stop me from putting Captain America: Civil War at the top of my list, I would’ve thought you were crazy. Yet, here we are, with Hail, Caesar! topping the list and deservedly so.

These are not the only films I’m looking forward to in 2016; there’s many more. 2016 looks to be a great year for film, and I’m looking forward to hearing about some more of the indie releases coming out of Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals.

If you’d like to share your most anticipated films of 2016, please feel free to comment!

10 Most Anticipated Movies 2016: #6: The BFG

The BFGI realise that this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and definitely won’t be this high on many other lists, but there’s a soft spot in my heart for The BFG. I grew up reading many of Roald Dahl’s classics, but The BFG was always my favourite, so you could imagine my reaction when I heard Steven Spielberg was turning it into a movie.

The movie is about a young orphan named Sophie who encounters and befriends the BFG (Big Friendly Giant), who is outcast by his fellow giants as he refuses to eat young children. They then go on a great, big adventure that even sees them crossing paths with the Queen!

Sophie is played by newcomer Ruby Barnhill, and she I joined by a fabulous cast including: Mark Rylance (reuniting with Spielberg after Bridge of Spies), Penelope Wilton, Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader and Jermaine Clement.

The teaser trailer released a month or so ago was much better than I expected. Many have commented on how it looks like Spielberg is taking inspiration from Harry Potter, and I think that’s a great idea and will help the movie reach a larger audience.

I can’t wait to feel like a child again whilst watching this movie come July 22nd!

10 Most Anticipated Movies 2016: #7: Suicide Squad

suicide squadThis is a very bold move on behalf of DC and Warner Bros. The first film they’re going to after Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, is Suicide Squad. A safer bet probably would’ve been Wonder Woman, or a solo Batman film. That’s part of the reason why I am excited for this film though, it’s a massive risk, and based on the trailer, I think it’s a risk that is going to pay off.

The movie, based on the DC comic book, is about a secret task force run by head of A.R.G.U.S Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis), which recruits super villains to do the jobs too dangerous or risky for heroes, in order to gain shorter prison sentences.

The cast is nothing short of superb. Viola Davis, Jared Leto,Will Smith, Cara Delevingne, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnamon and many more make up this exceptional cast. Suicide Squad is written and directed by David Ayer.

I, along with the rest of the world, am eagerly anticipating the debut of Jared Leto’s Joker. Judging from the promotional images featuring him, Leto is clearly taking The Joker into new territory that we have yet to see before on big screen. Will he be better than Jack Nicolson? Better than Heath Ledger? That would be pretty damn hard to beat, but I’m certainly looking forward to finding out!

The trailer released a few months back is the main reason why this is so high up on my list. It was absolutely perfect; it captured the tone of the Suicide Squad perfectly. It also showed us a clearer view of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, which I still believe is some of the most perfect casting I can remember.

I look forward to seeing whether DC’s big risk becomes a big success when Suicide Squad is released on 5th August!

10 Most Anticipated Movies 2016: #8: Doctor Strange

doctor strangeI’m going to say this now: I believe this will be my favourite Marvel movie to date. The reason why it is not higher on the list (or even the highest Marvel movie on the list) is because the anticipation for this is a slow-build. We’ve only just got some pictures as Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, but still no trailer. I think that once the trailer drops, this will shoot way up the list!

For those unfamiliar with the Doctor Strange comic books, he is a surgeon who has a terrible accident but gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under his wing and trains him to defend the world against evil.

After getting to explore large parts of the MCU earth through Iron Man, Captain America etc, and getting to see some areas of cosmic Marvel with the Guardians of the Galaxy, we will finally get to explore the mystic areas of the MCU. I am so excited for that!

The cast for Doctor Strange is exceptional too! Cumberbatch is joined by Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Scott Adkins. It will be directed by Scott Derrickson, who is mostly known for his work in the horror genre. With a cast like this, it is impossible for me not to be excited for this movie!

I can assure you that I’ll be first in line when Doctor Strange reaches UK cinemas on 28th October.

10 Most Anticipated Movies 2016: #9: Assassin’s Creed

assasains creedI’m not much of a video game player, but this adaption of the hit game franchise has me brimming with anticipation.

Assassin’s Creed follows main character Callum Lynch as he uses  futuristic technology that unlocks his genetic memories and allows him to travel back in time to 15th century Spain. This is where he takes on the role of one of his assassin ancestors, Aguilar, who had been battling the Knights Templar for centuries.

I’m not too sure what the ‘Knights Templar’ is, but the premise sounds highly interesting.

The movie is directed by Justin Kurzel, and reunites him with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, after the trio worked on this year’s splendid Macbeth adaption. Fassbender and Cotillard are joined by Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson in supporting roles.

Anticipation for this film has been building for a while, as it was initially announced years ago, but I’m confident it’ll be worth the wait.

10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2016: #10: La La Land

After the sensation that was Whiplash, Damien Chazelle could film anything and I would be first in line to see it.

La La Land is about the relationship between jazz pianist (played by Ryan Gosling) and an aspiring actress (played by Emma Stone), set in modern day Los Angeles. Fascinatingly, the movie is a drama/musical. This is interesting because it sounds much lighter than Chazelle’s previous project, not to mention that musical is a genre that very few have the balls to take on.

When discussing the beautiful image above of Gosling and Stone dancing, Chazelle stated that he “wanted to make a big love letter to the city and focus on that push and pull that all young artists experience, between dreams and reality, which old Hollywood musicals are so good at expressing. I just love the idea of a whole emotional arc told purely visually and musically.”

La La Land stars two of Hollywood’s hottest young actors in Gosling and Stone, and the supporting cast contains Finn Wittrock, John Legend, and Rosemarie DeWitt, as well as a reunion between Chazelle and Whiplash star JK Simmons.

All the pieces are set in place for La La Land to be a knockout of a film!
